Having firmly established its presence in India's sedan and SUV markets with the Seal and Atto 3, BYD is now setting its sights on conquering new frontiers. Recent trademarks and international showcases indicate that the Chinese EV giant is planning an aggressive expansion into untapped segments, with two key models leading the charge: the BYD Shark, a rugged plug-in hybrid pickup truck, and the BYD Seagull, an affordable compact electric hatchback. The potential arrival of the BYD Shark is particularly noteworthy as it would mark the entry of the first plug-in hybrid pickup truck into the Indian market, a space currently dominated by diesel stalwarts like the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu V-Cross. The Shark, which has already debuted globally, is built on a sophisticated DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) platform. This plug-in hybrid system combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with dual electric motors, delivering a staggering combined output of over 430 horsepower. BYD has already trademarked the 'Seagull' name in India, a strong indication of its intent to launch the vehicle here. Expected to be priced around the ₹10 lakh mark, the Seagull would directly challenge the Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet EV. The Seagull is based on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 and comes with two battery options globally: a 30 kWh pack with a range of around 305 km, and a 38 kWh pack offering up to 405 km. These figures, combined with BYD's famed Blade Battery safety and longevity, would make it a highly practical urban commuter. Despite its budget positioning, the Seagull doesn't skimp on features, offering a digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch rotating touchscreen, and a surprisingly spacious interior for its size. Its quirky, modern design is a breath of fresh air in the entry-level segment. A launch in 2026 seems plausible as BYD looks to leverage its brand recognition to drive volume sales. Together, the Shark and the Seagull represent a powerful two-pronged strategy for BYD's next phase of growth in India.
