BYD has officially entered the premium electric SUV segment in India with the launch of the highly anticipated Sealion 7 in February 2025. This new model, built on the company's advanced e-Platform 3.0, is positioned above the successful Atto 3 and alongside the Seal sedan, further solidifying BYD's image as a premium EV manufacturer. The Sealion 7's striking coupe-SUV design, advanced technology, and powerful performance specifications place it in direct competition with established luxury EVs like the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and even entry-level models from European luxury brands.
The Sealion 7 is the first vehicle in BYD's Indian lineup to be based on the 'Ocean-X' design concept, which gives it a distinct and aggressive look. The sharp, coupe-like roofline, muscular haunches, and a front fascia inspired by the Seal sedan create a commanding road presence. The design is not just for aesthetics; it is also highly aerodynamic, which contributes to the vehicle's overall efficiency and range.
Available in both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations, the Sealion 7 caters to different performance preferences. The top-tier AWD variant is a powerhouse, equipped with a dual-motor setup that produces a combined output of over 523 bhp, enabling it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in under 4 seconds. The RWD variant, while more focused on range, still offers brisk performance. Both versions are powered by an 82.56 kWh Blade Battery pack, with the RWD model offering a claimed range of around 570 km on a single charge.
The interior of the Sealion 7 exudes luxury and cutting-edge technology. The cabin is spacious and features high-quality materials throughout. Central to the dashboard is a large, 15.6-inch rotating infotainment screen, which controls most of the vehicle's functions. The driver is treated to a digital instrument cluster and a head-up display. The Sealion 7 is also equipped with the advanced DiSus-C adaptive suspension system, the same technology found in the top-tier Seal sedan, promising a sophisticated balance between ride comfort and handling prowess.
Safety is a key focus, with the Sealion 7 being equipped with a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), a 360-degree camera, and multiple airbags, ensuring a high level of protection for its occupants.
BYD has priced the Sealion 7 competitively within the premium EV space, with ex-showroom prices ranging from ₹48.90 lakh to ₹54.90 lakh. At this price point, it offers a compelling blend of striking design, exhilarating performance, long-range capability, and a feature list that rivals or surpasses its competitors. The launch of the Sealion 7 is a clear indicator of BYD's aggressive strategy for the Indian market. The company is no longer just competing in the entry-level EV space but is confidently challenging established players in the lucrative premium segment, leveraging its technological strengths in battery and platform development.
